Newsletter | Articles ![]() A landmark declaration recognising the Isle of Man has its own identity and interests in the international arena was announced last month. The framework of principles reinforces the Island's separate status within the context of its constitutional relationship with the UK. It is the culmination of about two years of discussions between the Isle of Man government and its UK and other Crown Dependency counterparts. Chief Minister Tony Brown, who signed the document on behalf of the Isle of Man Government, said: “This is a significant step forward in the Isle of Man's evolution as a mature and responsible democracy. It confirms in writing that the Island has its own distinct and legitimate interests on the world stage, which may differ from those of the UK.” The 10 point document, setting out a framework of principles for the development of the international identity of the Isle of Man, was signed on behalf of the UK by the Lord Chancellor, Lord Falconer. Mr Brown said it should help the Island’s reputation flourish. He said: “There is now a greater clarity about the Island’s position, which will be useful in dealing with governments, organizations and businesses around the globe. The Isle of Man has a very good, high-quality regulatory system for many many businesses. We are in this world market.” The UK has ultimate responsibility for the Isle of Man internationally. But it is understood that the UK will not act internationally on behalf of the Isle of Man without prior consultation and will seek to represent any differing interests when acting in an international capacity. The UK's role is one of support not interference and there is an agreement to commit to open, effective and meaningful dialogue between the Island and the UK to resolve matters which may affect their constitutional relationship. |
